Indian housewife strips in public against dowry harassment
Pooja Chauhan, a 22-year-old housewife from Rajkot took the extreme step of walking on the streets in her undergarments to protest against mental and physical harassment for bearing a girl child and for not bringing dowry. Due to this the police reacted immediately and arrested her husband Pratapsinh Chauhan, parents-in-laws and two of her neighbours after she threatened to scale up the protest by walking completely nude to the Police Commissioner's office.

The most essential ingredient needed to survive in a sere environment, where mild pleas are dismissed, protests if not validated by money/ muscle power , ignored, torture rubbished, is nerves of steel.
Pooja Chauhan a hapless wife, daughter-in-law and mother was driven to strip down in a gesture which bespoke of aberrant helplessness, after repeated complaints to the Police accusing her husband and in laws of torture fell on deaf ears. Her fault: She gave birth to a baby daughter 8 months ago when her in laws desired a son. Also she refused to bring in more dowry as was being constantly demanded.
A while ago she had tried to immolate herself in front of the Police headquarters but was reprimanded. Her frustration and sense of outrage at the apathy of the Police officials on one hand and the violation of her sense of self on the other at the hands of her in laws, led her to take this heterodox step.
Breaking age old shackles of modesty she might have been ingrained with, discarding false notions of propriety she stripped herself to draw attention to her plight. Her angst though unspoken stridently conveyed her misery loud and clear!!
Its easy to deprecate her actions, to take umbrage over her decision. But those who do, imo lack a sense of compassion for human suffering. If nescience be the excuse, its even more shameful.Her state of mind shattered, on the edges of insanity, a woman pushed to the enth degree, as if proclaiming ‘ What more do you want me to do?’ . I for one laud her for her gutsy stance, showing her thumb to the world and expressing her anguish and frustration in the most potent manner she possibly had at her disposal.
The point is that in stripping herself she has in fact stripped the system and exposed its pathetic inadequacies. Clap! Clap!
With a show of extreme alacrity the Ministers have now responded, rebuked the officers for their inaction and promised to give her a patient hearing. Are we supposed to at this point rise and bow to them in deference for being sensitive and cognisant of women centric problems? Not me..
Justice is Blind!! Oh yeah.. deaf as well. Not just in the courts but in Governmental departments across the board. So what do they expect now? That the women of the country resort to undressing to awaken them from their slumber?
Read the last sentence of the link guys.. The police plans to book her for ‘indecent exposure’. Oh Yeah ..’Indecent’..Is it? The system holds the key to ‘decent behaviour’ as also its interpretation apparently in wide disparity of its socially acceptable if not morally applicable perspective. No wonder their judgement or connotation of ‘behaviour’ failed to elicit any response from them with regards to her in laws, if not their own!!
